IBM, the enterprise AI and computing group IBM, adds Siemens to its push toward denser chips, with shares at $230.60, down less than 0.1%, as of approximately 11:55 a.m. ET on October 14. The research collaboration tackles a critical hurdle: making IBM’s nanostack transistor architecture practical to manufacture. Packing more computing power into less space matters. Producing those chips reliably is the tougher test.

According to IBM’s announcement, its 7-angstrom research design targets nearly 100 billion transistors in an area roughly the size of a fingernail. Transistors stack vertically, with different materials possible across layers. Siemens brings chip-design software, simulation and lithography expertise to help researchers identify fabrication problems before building physical chips. But the commercial milestones remain open: the announcement provides no manufacturing-yield figures, production deadline or revenue commitment.
