Microsoft is taking a hardware component that has always lived behind a vendor’s locked door and handing the blueprint to the public. On October 13, 2026, the company detailed plans to open-source the firmware, driver, and software stack behind Azure Integrated HSM, the server-local hardware security module it now builds into every new Azure server. The move, described in an announcement authored by Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich under the headline “Advancing hardware security with open-source Integrated HSM technology,” marks one of the more unusual bets a major cloud provider has placed on transparency as a security strategy rather than a liability.
