International Business Machines (IBM) has just moved into Stage C of DARPA’s Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, putting its quantum hardware and architectures under intensive government testing that could matter for how investors think about IBM’s long term computing bets.

For investors, the news around DARPA’s quantum program is landing against a tougher tape. International Business Machines’ share price has fallen about 22% year to date and is down roughly 21% over the past 90 days, even after a 2.8% gain on the latest close at US$226.61. At the same time, the 5 year total shareholder return of about 100% and the 3 year total shareholder return of roughly 76% show that longer term holders have still seen sizeable value creation despite the recent pullback. This suggests the market is reassessing near term execution risks around earnings misses and deal timing while IBM increases its focus on quantum, AI and hybrid cloud opportunities.
