Google releases new guidelines for EEA Carousels Beta Structured Data

Google recently updated its structured data guide in a beta version of structured data carousels specifically intended for users in the European Economic Area. This update is in preparation for the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The new guide provides information on how to utilize this structured data on summary or category pages and for paginated categories.

The Rich Carousel Results (Beta) is designed for travel, local, and shopping inquiry sites that are presented to users in the EEA. Google Search users can now horizontally scroll through tiles containing detailed information relevant to their search. Websites that implement this new structured data are eligible to be featured in the rich results within the carousel.

The initial announcement in February 2024 stated that visibility for purchasing inquiries will initially be limited to the Czech Republic, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The updated documentation includes a new three-sentence paragraph that has been added to the current Structured Data Carousels (beta) documentation. The new guide instructs users to thoroughly check all items on the summary or category page, add an Item List to each subsequent page for paginated categories, and focus on marking entities that are initially loaded into the viewport for infinite scrolling.

The reason for this update is explained in the changelog, which addresses the need for guidance on marking categories with numerous items in structured data carousels. This was prompted by a question received through Google’s feedback button regarding the implementation of this markup for categories with many elements like paginated content or infinite scrolling.
