I’ve used Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 for years, so I’m well aware of how difficult they are to replace. But I’ve also watched free, open-source alternatives quietly get better, and today’s options are much more convincing than they were a few years ago. And with Microsoft 365 Personal costing $9.99 a month, there’s a pretty good reason to see what else is out there.
I’ll start with free suites that can replace several Microsoft apps at once, before moving on to alternatives for individual apps and services—because if you only really use one or two Microsoft apps, you may not need the whole Microsoft 365 subscription.
