Google’s Naptime project aims to improve automated discovery of vulnerabilities using a large language model (LLM). The project focuses on the interaction between an AI agent and a target code base, equipping the agent with specialized tools to mimic the workflow of a vulnerability investigator. Named for allowing humans to “take regular naps” while aiding in vulnerability research, Naptime leverages LLMs’ code understanding and reasoning abilities to identify security vulnerabilities.

The framework includes components like a code exploration tool, Python tool for fuzzing, debugging tool, and a reporter tool to monitor progress. Naptime is model- and backend-agnostic, excelling at detecting buffer overflows and memory corruption faults based on CYBERSECEVAL 2 benchmarks. In tests against OpenAI GPT-4 Turbo, Naptime achieved higher scores in reproducing and exploiting vulnerabilities, showcasing its ability to closely mimic human security experts’ approach.
