The University of North Carolina (UNC) System is expanding educational opportunities for adult learners in North Carolina to address the enrollment cliff expected by 2025. The UNC System aims to close the educational achievement gap in the state by ensuring 2 million North Carolinians have a postsecondary credential by 2030. To achieve this goal, the UNC System launched the non-profit EdTech startup Kitty Hawk Project in 2021 to focus on expanding affordable learning opportunities for adults.

The Kitty Hawk Project partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) Professional Services to build an integration platform for EdTech systems that enhances the integration of services and data across the entire educational network. This platform enables Project Kitty Hawk and its clients to analyze and visualize detailed insights across the student journey.

When developing capabilities for online programs, the Kitty Hawk Project and AWS team considered the needs of students, teachers, administrators, and business aspects of EdTech. By prioritizing data security, compliance, and integration flexibility, the project aims to deliver a high-quality online learning experience at a scalable price.

The integration architecture created for Project Kitty Hawk ensures flexibility and agility when integrating third-party EdTech software-as-a-service (SaaS) providers. This architecture allows seamless integration of services and data sources to all customers through a multi-tenant model, prioritizing privacy and accessibility of each customer’s data.

The data value chain implemented by Project Kitty Hawk follows a flywheel pattern for continuous improvement of the customer experience through data ingestion, sharing, analysis, and decision-making. This data-driven approach has resulted in significant improvements in access, experience, and outcomes for students, faculty, and administrators in higher education.

Project Kitty Hawk has successfully launched eight academic programs within one year and has partnered with North Carolina Central University and East Carolina University. The collaboration between Project Kitty Hawk and AWS has set new standards for EdTech integrations and data management in higher education, offering innovations that can benefit other organizations seeking similar results.
