‘Emergency’ vote on Wilmington Amazon data center would block resident-backed referendum

WILMINGTON, Ohio (WXIX) – The high-stakes legal battle over a proposed $4 billion Amazon Web Services data center is heading back to Wilmington City Hall Thursday.

City officials are holding a special 6 p.m. meeting to begin to redo several ordinances after a federal judge recently forced an agreement for them to correct their previous approvals.

The ordinances include rezoning, data center use rules and generator noise – and this time the city must follow the state’s open meetings laws and notify residents 30 days in advance.

To bypass further legal delays and secure the massive investment, however, the Wilmington City Council is expected to try to pass the changes under “emergency” status so it takes effect immediately, bypassing the typical 30-day waiting period.

Under Ohio law, emergency ordinances are exempt from being challenged or overturned by public referendum.

City leaders say the redo is necessary to keep the project on track, but many residents are outraged.
