Courts are taking action against error-filled, AI-powered legal briefs

When a US judge discovered fake quotes in a lawyer’s letter earlier this year, the lawyer admitted that he had used Claude, an artificial intelligence chatbot, to write the document.

This earned him a fine and a mandatory course on how to properly use AI.

But this case was just one of many AI “hallucinations” that clouded the legal situation. Now some courts are trying to stem the tide by taking tough action against the lawyers involved.

It was Judge Jerry Edwards Jr. of the Louisiana District Court who imposed sanctions on the attorney last month in this latest U.S. case. He discovered the AI-generated hallucinations while reviewing a request to block evidence from being admitted in a personal injury case.

He caught seven citations that referred to previous court decisions that either did not appear in the original decisions or were misrepresented.
