Google has decided to reduce the number of AI Overviews that appear on its search engine results pages. This move comes after receiving criticism for displaying misinformation and false responses, particularly in the health sector. Many experts believe this reduction was overdue, as Google has been accused of not doing enough to combat false data circulating unchecked. Despite defending the feature, Google faced backlash for not addressing serious concerns raised by users.
Two SEO platforms noted a decrease in Reddit’s visibility in AI Overviews, with other top domains cited including LinkedIn, Runnersworld, Wikipedia, and Runrepeat. Statistics show that 84% of these overviews link to domains featured in Google’s top 10 organic search results. Featured snippets often accompany AI Overviews, with citations matching up to 61% of the time. These overviews typically contain 4342 characters and ads appear in 87% of cases.
AI Overviews are prevalent in relationship, tech, and food-related topics, while local terms usually do not trigger them. Businesses are apprehensive about Google’s shift towards becoming more of an answer engine rather than a traditional search engine. Many are calling on Google to address the issue to maintain credibility and trust among users. Analysts predict a significant increase in AI Overview queries and ad revenue in the coming years.
