Artificial intelligence infrastructure start-up Firmus Technologies will fund the first new fiber optic cable to Tasmania in 20 years under a deal with subsea cable company Subco, which Firmus says will accelerate the construction of its AI factory.
The new cable, called Bernacchi-1, will connect northern Tasmania to Subco’s new 5000 kilometer cable system connecting Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The mainland cables will go into operation this month. Completion of the Tasmanian link – which will be taken over by Firmus but built and operated by Subco – is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027.
