For years, crime victims and those seeking to challenge convictions have said the UK system for accessing court records is prohibitively expensive and unnecessarily bureaucratic.
The government has taken steps to improve this transparency. In a recent investigation, I revealed that the government has abandoned its policy of destroying court records. However, significant hurdles remain for those seeking access to these records.
Now the government has unveiled a plan to use artificial intelligence (AI) to make court records cheaper and more accessible.
The Justice Department will conduct a trial using its in-house AI called Justice Transcribe to create court transcripts. The pilot study, which is being overseen by the Courts and Tribunals Administration, will assess how accurate the AI transcriptions are before potentially rolling out the system nationwide.
