Australia risks repeating the mistakes it made with social media if it doesn’t quickly regulate the spread of artificial intelligence in the workplace, according to a new report.
The study, produced by the John Curtin Research Center and supported by the SDA, Australia’s largest retail and fast food union, warns that uncontrolled AI could increase worker surveillance, unsafe workloads and job insecurity.
Researchers draw comparisons to social media, where the lack of early rules allowed platforms to become conduits for misinformation and public harm, and called on the federal government to ensure appropriate AI protections are in place before the spread becomes uncontrollable.
“AI is so much more powerful than social media,” said report co-author Dominic Meagher.
“This time we don’t have the luxury of getting it wrong.“
