Australian drivers scammed by false calls from AI-powered seat belt recognition cameras have had more than $1 million in fines overturned.

Controversial police cameras have resulted in an average of 300 fines per day in Western Australia.

A report by the West Australian found that thousands of drivers have appealed the fines imposed by the system and that around 60 per cent of them have had their fines overturned.

This represents a fine of more than $1 million, which will be reimbursed by the state government.

WA Transport Safety Minister Reece Whitby told ABC Radio that more than 50,000 people were caught doing the wrong thing by cameras peering into cars from high positions and that fewer than 4 per cent of infringements were overturned.

“These new security cameras have actually changed behavior and I have no doubt they have actually saved lives,” he told ABC Radio.
