The consequences of this gap are becoming increasingly clear as AI adoption increases across the economy. According to the Tech Council of Australia, AI has reached a critical tipping point, moving out of its IT silo and into the broader economy.

“Technology-enabled work now contributes as much economic value outside the technology sector as within it,” says Ilana Feain, research director at the Tech Council of Australia. “Technology is no longer just an industry. It is driving productivity and growth across the economy.”

For most companies, the window of opportunity to turn AI into a competitive advantage is shrinking, and the challenge today is no longer adopting the technology, but rather integrating it into the way work is organized and managed.
