The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s planned acquisition of Juniper Networks. The CMA is assessing whether this deal will reduce competition in the UK market for goods or services.
HPE announced the acquisition in January 2024, aiming to combine their strengths in networking and IT infrastructure. The deal is valued at $14 billion, with HPE offering $40 per share for Juniper Networks.
Given the size of the deal, regulatory scrutiny was expected. The UK is the first to investigate, with the European Commission and the FTC likely to follow suit. Brazilian regulators have already given approval. Regulatory hurdles have the potential to derail deals, such as Adobe’s failed acquisition of Figma last year.
The CMA is gathering comments from stakeholders until July 3, with a decision on whether to proceed to a phase 2 investigation due by August 14. We have reached out to HPE for comment and will provide updates as we receive more information.
