Publicis takes Microsoft from Dentsu and underlines where media buying is heading

It is another statement win for Publicis and one that puts fresh focus on the role of AI, data and infrastructure in media buying.

Nobody does account-move symbolism quite like Publicis.

Now Publicis has taken a marquee account from another rival facing its own well-publicized challenges: Dentsu.

Microsoft has confirmed it is ending its 12-year association with the Tokyo-headquartered firm and moving its estimated $700m global media account to Publicis. The news will come as no surprise to Dentsu staff, who were informed during a company town hall last week before the move leaked to the trade press.

New today is how the switch is being framed: less as a straightforward media appointment and more as part of an expanded strategic partnership between Microsoft and Publicis. In fact, Publicis’ appointment as global media agency of record is effectively buried in a much broader announcement about how the pair plan to embed agentic AI across the marketing workflow.
