Willie Mays, a beloved Baseball Hall of Famer, passed away at the age of 93 on Tuesday, leaving Giants fans heartbroken. Shortly after the news broke, fans gathered at the base of Mays’ statue outside Oracle Park to pay their respects to the legendary player known as “The Say Hey Kid.”
Mays’ statue was unveiled at the stadium on March 31, 2000, as a tribute to one of the greatest MLB players ever and undoubtedly the best to don a Giants uniform. The statue is surrounded by 24 palm trees, symbolizing Mays’ iconic number, 24. The plaza holds even more significance for fans in the Bay Area following Mays’ passing.
One emotional fan left a note at the statue expressing their love and admiration for Mays and bidding him farewell as the “Say Hey Kid” and a Giant forever. The location near the statue, usually bustling with fans attending Giants games, will now serve as a place for fans to honor and remember the life and legacy of one of baseball’s most influential players for many years to come.
