Artificial intelligence consumes enormous amounts of electricity in the USA. According to the International Energy Agency, AI systems and data centers consumed about 415 terawatt hours of electricity in 2024. This represents more than 10% of the country’s total electricity production, and demand is expected to double by 2030.
This rapid growth has raised concerns about sustainability. In response, researchers at an engineering school have developed a proof-of-concept AI system that is said to be far more efficient. Their approach could reduce energy consumption by a factor of 100 while improving task performance.
A hybrid approach called Neurosymbolic AI
The research comes from the laboratory of Matthias Scheutz, Karol Family Professor of Applied Technology. His team is developing neurosymbolic AI that combines traditional neural networks with symbolic thinking. This method reflects how people approach problems by breaking them down into steps and categories.
