The patient consent process for AI scribes is patchy and often inadequate, with some GP practices relying solely on waiting room signs, a patient group says.

The speed and scale at which GPs have embraced AI writers has been remarkable: one survey found that 40% of GPs are already using them – evidence of how they have transformed doctors’ working lives.

However, patients are increasingly concerned about informed consent, privacy and accuracy, says Dr. Elizabeth Deveny (PhD), CEO of the Consumer Health Forum of Australia.

“Some GPs do a great job of making sure a patient knows about the AI scribe before they come in,” says Ms Deveny AusDoc.
