Despite garnering over two million active users and hundreds of millions of dollars in funding since its launch in 2023, AI music platform Suno doesn’t exactly have a stellar reputation in the music community.
Sunos criticism I would say that the type of prompt-based song generation the platform promotes is lazy and uninspired at best, and at worst a pale and unethical imitation of creativity that threatens to drain money from real musicians – the same musicians who wrote the music that Suno used to train its AI models, leading to alleged copyright infringement legal action from major record labels around the world.
This may explain why the company undertook a subtle rebrand last year, attempting to shed its reputation as an ethically dubious slop generator for musical amateurs and reposition itself as a legitimate creative tool for musicians, songwriters and producers.
