“Fuck it. Utah has become 35% less culturally relevant, and thankfully they’re gone. They don’t deserve it. Move on, again and again.” Those were the first words out of director Daniel Roher’s mouth when he sat down with his co-director Charlie Tyrell at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to talk about their film The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocalypticist. Roher, which won an Oscar for best documentary in 2022 Navalny, has an opinion — not just on the festival’s move from Park City to Boulder, but on a whole range of topics. But he considers himself an “apocaloptimist” — that’s “apocalypse” plus “optimist” — when it comes to artificial intelligence, meaning he doesn’t believe it will destroy the world. Ever the optimist, he could be pretty snarky as we spoke in a private room at Old Town Cellars on Park City’s Main Street.
