A new scientific study raises concerns about how artificial intelligence chatbots could promote delusions, particularly in vulnerable people.
Last week, a summary of existing evidence on artificial intelligence-induced psychosis was published in the Lancet Psychiatry, highlighting how chatbots can promote delusional thinking – although perhaps only in people who are already vulnerable to psychotic symptoms. The authors advocate clinical testing of AI chatbots in collaboration with trained mental health professionals.
For his article, Dr. Hamilton Morrin, psychiatrist and researcher at King’s College London, 20 media reports on so-called “AI psychoses” describing current theories about how chatbots could trigger or worsen delusions.
