The ‘most common’ AI-related crimes Australians fear most

More than half of Australian adults fear artificial intelligence will harm them, and almost as many fear becoming victims of a technology-enabled crime, new research has found.

A report released on Wednesday by the Australian Institute of Criminology found most Australians have concerns about platforms that use AI to track their location, access their devices or accounts, impersonate or deceive them.

Based on responses from more than 16,000 Australians compiled for the 2024 Australian Cybercrime Survey and an additional questionnaire on AI, the report provides “the clearest national picture of Australians’ fear of AI misuse,” the AIC said.
