‘I felt defamed’: Perth mother and business owner canceled by Metas KI

Perth hairdresser and makeup artist Taryn Elliott woke up last Friday to a notification that felt like a punch in the gut. It wasn’t a technical error; It was character assassination by an algorithm.

Meta – the parent company behind Facebook and Instagram – suddenly had both her personal and business accounts blocked.

The reason given was both puzzling and appalling: an alleged violation of community standards regarding child sexual exploitation and nudity.

“First of all, I’m a mother, so it almost feels like I’ve been defamed,” Elliott said.

“In my head I know I’m not that kind of person, so it’s just weird and disgusting.”

The 45-year-old single mother has been a fixture in the Perth beauty scene for decades. She suspects her “crime” was simply doing her job during school prom season.
