Australia’s NIMBYs haven’t had a real chance to gain a foothold in data centers yet, but they’re coming. Electricity, water and noise are the three big factors, and while state governments are happy to tender and announce new data centers, they have never addressed the fact that it is a hot political issue.
It has already exploded in parts of the US, where about half of the world’s data centers are located. States are passing laws to halt construction, delaying new projects while they look more closely at environmental impacts, or, for example, making big tech companies pay for their own infrastructure and use 100 percent renewable energy.
