Microsoft is charting a course towards AI self-sufficiency, aiming to reduce its reliance on OpenAI. The tech giant is developing its own advanced AI models, like MAI-1-preview, and diversifying its AI supplier base. This strategic shift follows a recent partnership restructuring with OpenAI, granting both entities greater independence to pursue their own AI development goals.

Microsoft is no longer content being powered by someone else’s AI. The company’s AI chief Mustafa Suleyman has told the Financial Times that Microsoft is pushing toward “true AI self-sufficiency”—a clear signal that the tech giant is actively reducing its dependence on OpenAI, even as the two companies remain contractually tied.“My personal mission at Microsoft is to build superintelligence,” Suleyman said in the interview, adding that the company must develop its own frontier foundation models with “gigawatt scale compute” and “some of the very best AI training team in the world.”
