Women working in the technology and financial services industries are at greater risk of losing their jobs due to increased use of AI and automation than their male counterparts, according to a report that found experienced women have also been sidelined due to “rigid hiring processes.”

According to the City of London Corporation report, mid-career women – with at least five years of professional experience – are being overlooked for digital roles in technology, finance and professional services, where they are traditionally underrepresented.

The agency that runs the capital’s Square Mile found that female applicants were discriminated against by a rigorous and partially automated review of their CVs that did not take into account career gaps related to caring for children or relatives or only narrowly considered their work experience.

To reverse the trend, the company is calling on employers to focus on retraining female workers who are not currently in technical jobs.
