There is a lot of talk about the wonders of artificial intelligence (AI) and its importance as a new frontier. And while it offers amazing opportunities in fields like medicine, scientists debate its benefits for university students. Peet van Aardt researches student writing and leads academic writing workshops at the University of the Free State Writing Center. It helps students formulate clear arguments, summarize the structure of an essay, and express their opinions in their own voice. He also leads the Initiative for Creative African Narratives (iCAN), a project that helps students publish their original stories. Here he shares his experiences and thoughts on the use of generative AI at the university.
What are your biggest concerns about the increase in AI-generated material from students?
