The EU’s new AI framework will also impact UK businesses and consumers

For the UK, post-Brexit, it is tempting to imagine that regulation will no longer come from Brussels. But one of the world’s most significant digital laws – the EU Artificial Intelligence Act – is now coming into force and its impact will reach UK businesses, regulators and citizens.

AI is already embedded in everyday life: in pricing loans, reviewing applications, detecting fraud, selecting medical services and distributing online content.

The EU’s AI law, which is gradually coming into force, is an attempt to make these invisible processes safer, more responsible and closer to European values. It reflects a conscious decision to manage the social and economic consequences of automated decision-making.

The law aims to harness the innovative power of AI while protecting EU citizens from its harm. The UK has chosen a more lenient regulatory path, but will not be immune to the consequences of the law….
