Under the proposed regulations, developers will also have to ensure that their AI models do not generate content that promotes gambling.
The announcement comes after a surge in the number of chatbots launched in China and around the world.
Once finalized, the rules will apply to AI products and services in China. This represents an important step toward regulating the fast-growing technology, which has come under intense scrutiny this year due to safety concerns.
Draft rules released over the weekend by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) include measures to protect children. These include requiring AI companies to offer personalized settings, time limits on use, and obtaining parental consent before providing emotional support services.
