It wasn’t the blatantly pornographic nature of Coralie Alison’s computer-generated image that troubled her most. So the small freckles on her arms were recreated on a fake body, distorted into a humiliating pose that she had not performed. Everyone exactly in their place.
Alison, operations director at Collective Shout, an Australian advocacy organization dedicated to preventing the exploitation of women and girls, says the AI image is not an isolated case.
Alison and her colleagues have borne the brunt of online attacks since 2019, when they decided to combat deepfakes with artificial intelligence and “nudify” apps – platforms that allow users to upload anyone’s face to turn them into sexually explicit or vulgar content.
