AI-Driven Development Life Cycle (AI-DLC) promises to realize the full potential of AI in software development. By emphasizing AI-driven workflows and human-centered decision-making, AI-DLC can deliver speed and quality. However, realizing these benefits depends on how companies effectively integrate AI into their technical workflows.
Through our work with engineering teams across multiple industries, we have identified three recurring challenges. These challenges consistently limit the effectiveness of AI in accelerating modern software development. The first challenge is consistent workflows. These workflows force every project to follow the same rigid sequence of steps. The second challenge is the lack of flexible depth in the workflow phases. This leads to over-engineering or insufficient accuracy. The third challenge is tools that overly automate. These tools inadvertently distract people from critical validation and oversight tasks.
