Google is closing in on dominant chip maker Nvidia, while tech giant Meta is considering a multi-billion dollar deal for Google’s AI chips.
Once best known for its gaming hardware, Nvidia became the world’s most valuable company last year after it successfully repurposed its graphics processing units (GPUs) for the AI boom.
With the unlikely chipmaker commanding a lion’s share of the AI chip market, Google steadily improved, leasing out its own AI-specific Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) for use in its Google Cloud platform.
More recently, Google has approached high-profile customers – including Facebook’s parent company Meta – with the option to use TPUs in their own data centers.
Meta is considering the proposal, according to a person familiar with the matter.
