Surf Life Saving NSW is testing new artificial intelligence (AI) camera technology to prevent rock fishing tragedies in some of the state’s most vulnerable coastal locations.
The SAIL (Surveillance AI for Life saving) project uses AI to improve coastal safety by detecting incidents in real time and alerting rescuers earlier, expanding lifesaving capabilities beyond the red and yellow patrol flags.
The trial, jointly funded by NSW and the federal government, uses AI-enabled cameras to detect when someone is washed off the rocks or enters the water unexpectedly, and to alert lifesavers and emergency services.

Cameras capture continuous video feeds and when the AI detects an emergency event, the SLSNSW State Operations Center (SOC) is alerted, which then assigns the nearest, most appropriate rescue resource to respond.
