Clifford Chance to reduce staff in London services sector as use of AI increases

Law firm Clifford Chance is reducing the number of business services staff at its London office by 10%, with increased use of artificial intelligence a factor in the decision.

The PwC boss has also suggested that AI could lead to fewer workers being hired at the accounting and consulting group.

Clifford Chance, one of the largest international law firms, is cutting about 50 positions in areas such as finance, human resources and IT and making changes to up to 35 other positions, according to the Financial Times, which first reported the cuts.

According to the FT report, greater use of AI and lower demand for some business services are the reasons for the cuts, as well as more work in offices outside Clifford Chance’s main stores in the UK and US, in countries such as Poland and India.

A spokesperson for Clifford Chance said: “In line with our strategy to strengthen our operations, we can confirm that we are proposing changes to some of our London-based business functions.”
