(Editor’s note: Spoilers ahead for Pluribus Episode 3.)
A lot happens in episode 3 of Vince Gilligan’s science fiction series Pluribusbut the plot could simply be summarized as: “Carol (Rhea Seehorn) tries to find out the limits of what the hive mind is willing to do for her and finds that there are none.” No matter what she asks, the collective consciousness of humanity says yes – even when it shouldn’t. The Hivemind is also sycophantic and constantly tells Carol how great she is and how much it loves her.
Watch the latest episode of Pluribus felt strangely familiar. Then I realized: the way Carol interacts with the Hivemind is almost exactly the same as using ChatGPT. Constant positive reinforcement and the innate desire to always say “yes” are both characteristics that define OpenAI’s popular generative AI chatbot.
