By 2026, global spending on artificial intelligence is expected to reach nearly half a trillion dollars. Nvidia, which makes chips for nearly every major AI company, recently became the first company to be valued at $5 trillion. In the search for superintelligence, investors have poured hundreds of billions of dollars into building data centers that ultimately require more electricity than many major American cities.
The investment is based on the promise that AI could one day create miracle cures, program everything, automate everything and invent everything ad infinitum. But is that day just around the corner? A decade away? And will it ever generate enough profit to offset this huge investment?
