Google Maps Timeline, formerly known as Location History, is a feature that allows users to track and record the places they’ve visited and the routes taken to get there. The feature automatically records the user’s precise location at random times, even when not using a Google app. This data is traditionally linked to the user’s Google account, allowing access from any device signed in to that account.
However, Google is now transitioning away from storing timeline data on the cloud and instead generating and maintaining the data on the user’s device. This means that each device will create its own timeline data that will not be sent to the cloud. As a result, Google will no longer display timeline data on the web, as all data will be locked on users’ devices.
To preserve existing timeline data, users must update the Google Maps app on the device they wish to save the data to. A notification will prompt users to take action and save their data, with a deadline of December 1, 2024, to do so. It is also recommended to backup this data, so it can be restored if switching devices.
For users who do not have Timeline enabled, they will need to activate it in their Google Account settings. Timeline data can no longer be accessed from the web, so users are advised to use the app instead for viewing their data.
