New Chair Elected by NSF Board from IBM Executive

Darío Gil has made history by becoming the first active industry executive to be appointed as the president of the National Science Board in over 30 years. The board, responsible for overseeing the National Science Foundation and advising the government on science and engineering policy, selected IBM Research Director Darío Gil for the prestigious role. This marks a significant change from previous presidents who were primarily academic or government officials. Gil, with a background in electrical engineering, has been a member of the board since 2020. Victor McCrary, vice president for research at the University of the District of Columbia, was re-elected as vice president for a third term. Currently, there are eight open seats on the council, which is comprised of 24 members appointed directly by the president. Overall, this appointment indicates a shift towards industry expertise in leading positions within the National Science Board.
