Amazon Web Services introduces new Wavelength Zones in Morocco and Senegal

AWS and Orange Middle East & Africa are partnering to bring AWS Wavelength to Morocco and Senegal later this year, making them the first countries in Africa to have a Wavelength zone without an AWS region or Local Zone. This move will benefit customers in industries like telecommunications, finance, public sector, healthcare, and gaming that require low-latency applications and data residency. Orange’s strong presence and experience in these markets will support AWS customers in regulated industries and those needing low latency services.

AWS has been prioritizing customer needs since its Wavelength Zones announcement in 2019, focusing on delivering a secure and consistent experience for applications across various environments. Collaboration with CSPs like Bell Canada, B.T., KDDI, SK Telecom, Verizon, and Vodafone has helped accelerate the development of enterprise solutions and new use cases for customers.

The new Wavelength zones in collaboration with Orange will support various Amazon services like EC2, EBS, ECS, EKS, EMR, and ALB to cater to a wide range of workloads. Customers can benefit from on-demand scaling, pay-as-you-go pricing, operational consistency, and familiar tools for automation and security.

Architectural fundamentals of AWS Wavelength Zones include VPC extension, subnet creation, operator gateway for Internet access, operator IP attachment, and Internet access support through Carrier Gateway. Furthermore, customers like Swarmio are looking to leverage AWS Wavelength for telco-grade gaming technology, and others use it for real-time fraud analysis in online payments.

By extending AWS services to localized infrastructure, AWS Wavelength allows customers to process and store data locally while leveraging AWS cloud’s scalability and security. The Wavelength zones in Morocco and Senegal will be open later this year, providing customers with innovative solutions.
