Google has announced a partnership with RapidSOS, a platform for emergency responders, to provide users with the ability to communicate with 911 through RCS (Rich Messaging Service). This feature will be rolled out this winter to users who do not have text-to-911 capabilities. Initially, it will only be available to Google Messages users.
Currently, only 54% of 911 call centers in the US offer texting services, according to AccessSOS. Google’s new feature will help users in areas where they may not be able to contact emergency services through calls or text messages. Since this feature is based on RCS, users can send images and videos to emergency services for more context.
Elmar Weber, CEO of Android Business Communications, stated that “Emergency texting with RCS in Google Messages will provide critical safety communications capabilities that were previously unavailable to users when they need them most”. The goal is to make RCS the standard for emergency services text messaging and to work with partners in the ecosystem to ensure reliable emergency messaging for everyone.
Google also mentioned that 911 with RCS will allow users to confirm the delivery of their messages and check if first responders are actively responding. Android Emergency Location Services will provide information such as the exact location and language of the device to emergency services, and users can opt-in to share medical information for better assistance in times of need.
