Research: Nearly all websites in the top 10 positions on Google have over 1,000 links from distinct domains

A recent analysis by Internet Marketing Ninjas revealed that over 96% of websites ranked in Google’s top 10 had more than 1000 backlinks from unique domains, with only 0.3% having fewer than 100 backlinks. Though Google claims that links are no longer a top three ranking signal, the data shows that sites with more backlinks tend to rank well.

Amazon dominated the top 10 rankings for 164 out of 200 keywords, followed by Walmart with 57. The study also found that the “weakest” site in the top 10 had 54 referring domains and ranked at position 6. On average, 164 unique domain backlinks were deemed necessary to rank in the top 10 for local search terms.

However, not all links are equal in value, with factors like the authority of the linking site, anchor text, and click-through rates influencing their impact. The analysis was based on the top 10 Google search results for 200 keyword phrases with commercial intent.

These findings align with previous studies conducted by SEO expert Eric Enge, indicating the continued importance of backlinks in ranking well on Google. As the landscape of search engine optimization evolves, understanding the significance of quality backlinks remains crucial for digital marketers.
