Google Play Store introduces new feature spotlighting apps that allow you to easily delete your account

Google has established a new requirement for apps in the Google Play Store that offer the ability to create user accounts. Apps must now allow for the deletion of accounts and associated data both within the app itself and on the web in order to remain listed in the Play Store. This mandate was announced last year and the deadline for app developers to comply is May 31, 2024.

Google has now begun displaying a new “Account Deletion Available” badge in the Data Security section of app listings on the Play Store to highlight this feature. This badge makes it easier for users to request the deletion of their accounts and data without having to reinstall a previously uninstalled app.

Developers have been urged by Google since December 2023 to include information about account deletion in their app listings. They also have the option to request an extension until the May deadline, after which non-compliant apps may face consequences such as removal from the Play Store. The new data deletion policy requires app developers to offer account and data deletion options within their apps and on the web, enabling users to delete their data even after uninstalling the app.

App developers who need to retain certain data for legitimate reasons, such as regulatory compliance, must disclose their data retention practices. The implementation of data wipe badges in the Play Store suggests that the deadline for compliance is near, and developers should not expect further extensions.

As users of the Google Play Store, have you noticed the new data deletion features? What is your opinion on them? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
