Over the past 25 years since its founding, technology has brought significant changes, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region where it is home to the majority of the world’s internet users. The rise of smartphones and the mobile economy has had a profound impact in this region. The next big change on the horizon is AI, which could bring economic benefits of up to $3 trillion by 2030 if fully adopted by companies in key Asia-Pacific countries. People in Asia and the Pacific are optimistic about the potential positive impact of AI on the way we work, learn, and access information.
AI has the potential to accelerate digital progress and address some of the region’s most pressing challenges, as seen in areas like agriculture, climate, and disease detection. However, many feel they lack the necessary skills to take full advantage of this opportunity.
To address this issue, Google has launched the $15 million AI Opportunities Fund: Asia-Pacific, supported by Google org. This fund aims to invest in developing critical AI skills and building trust among workers and job seekers, particularly in underserved communities across the region. It complements existing digital and AI training initiatives such as AI Basics for beginners, AI Startup School for entrepreneurs, and Google Cloud AI programs for businesses.
In collaboration with the Asian Business Philanthropy Network (AVPN) and backed by the Asian Development Bank, the fund will seek applications from social impact organizations to help reach those most likely to benefit from AI training. AVPN will work with local partners selected through an open call for proposals to address specific AI-related challenges and opportunities for job seekers and underserved micro and small businesses in the region.
Selected organizations will receive AI support in their local languages to provide skills training directly to their communities. Cash grants will also be provided to eliminate barriers to learning, such as limited access to educational resources. This initiative aims to bridge the skills gap and ensure that individuals and businesses in the Asia-Pacific region are equipped to harness the potential of AI for their benefit.
