‘Google Cast’ Takes Over from ‘Chromecast built-in’ Brand

At the 2024 I/O event, “Chromecast Integrated” was quietly changed back to “Google Cast,” undoing a rebranding from 2016. The original “Google Cast” name was replaced with “Chromecast built-in” in 2016 to align with the popular Chromecast dongles. LG had announced support for “Built-in Chromecast” in its webOS 2024-powered TVs earlier in the year. This change also extended to products like the Pixel tablet with a speaker charging dock.

Google Cast is now expanding its support to Android Automotive, enabling streaming capabilities in cars. The updated brand is reflected on Android.com, with chromecast.com/integrated redirecting to that page. Google Cast offers multi-screen TV and audio experiences with speakers, now encompassing the Google brand within its name.

This rebranding effort could be to solidify the connection to Google in the name. It’s expected that the Casting functionality for end users will remain unchanged, but they may notice a new badge on product packaging. The question arises on how this change will impact the branding of future Chromecast dongles made by Google, especially considering reports of a new Chromecast powered by Google TV in development. Google is likely to retain the successful Chromecast brand, potentially making changes like removing the “with Google TV” component. It’s possible that this rebranding is a strategic move to reserve the “Chromecast” name for Google’s own products.
