Microsoft has announced the commencement of WHCP hardware certification for the upcoming Windows feature update, version 24H2. This certification process ensures that the system requirements for Windows 11 24H2, including supported CPUs, are maintained by hardware partners such as AMD and Intel. Old processors without PopCnt and SSE4.2 instructions will not be eligible for Windows 11’s 24H2 update. The same eligibility criteria will apply to Windows Server 2025.
Additionally, Microsoft has introduced Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 this week, along with the minimum system requirements and supported processor families. Notably, SSD has been added as a minimum system requirement, aligning with rumors about SSD boot drives becoming mandatory for Windows 11 starting mid-2022.
The minimum requirements for Windows 11 Enterprise IoT LTSC 2024, categorized as preferred and optional, have been outlined by Microsoft. These requirements include processor specifications, system memory, storage size and type, system firmware, TPM, secure boot, DirectX, and display specifications. Microsoft has also published a list of supported Intel and AMD x86 processors, as well as Qualcomm and NXP Arm CPUs.
The list of supported Intel processors includes various generations of Intel Core processors, Xeon processors, Pentium processors, and Atom processors, along with their respective code names such as Meteor Lake, Raptor Lake, Alder Lake, Tiger Lake, Comet Lake, Coffee Lake, Whiskey Lake, Sapphire Rapids, Ice Lake, and others.
Similarly, the list of supported AMD processors and Qualcomm and NXP processors can be found on Microsoft’s support document. Microsoft last updated the list of supported CPUs for Windows 11 in March.
Overall, these hardware certification processes and minimum system requirements updates signify Microsoft’s commitment to ensuring compatibility with the latest hardware innovations and providing a seamless user experience with Windows operating systems.
