AMD has completed its mobile GPU lineup, just like its CES 2022 keynote and could now have what it takes to keep up with Nvidia.

Growing from eight RX 6000 GPUs in 2021 to over 18, AMD is doubling its efforts in 2022. Do these new GPUs finally have what it takes to hold their own against Nvidia?

New Radeon RX 6000M additions

Initially, the company is announcing five new mobile graphics cards, starting with its most powerful option, the Radeon RX 6850M XT. AMD claims this model is 7% faster than the RX 6800M, their most powerful mobile GPU to date. Meanwhile, the RX 6650M XT and RX 6650M are upgrades over the original RX 6600.

AMD even fills the entry-level market with the RX 6500M and 6300M. The RX 6400M was noticeably omitted.

All new models are based on the 6 nm process from TSMC, similar to the new Ryzen 6000 processors from AMD. AMD also says these GPUs offer 14% faster memory and 7% higher clock speeds.

Unfortunately, these are all the details that have been provided about these new cards. We’re still waiting for some tough performance specs to see how it compares to the best from Nvidia.

But that’s not all. AMD also announced three GPUs in a brand new line, the RX 6000S series. In the wording of AMD, the “S” in the name refers to “slim”, which means that these apply to the growing segment of thin and light gaming laptops. For AMD, that means laptops that are 0.78-inch or thinner, which is 20% thinner than what the previous GPUs could handle – as well as 4.5 pounds or less.

AMD claims the RX 6800S can reach over 100 frames per second (fps) in 1080p games at 100 watts in select titles at maximum settings. AMD also mentioned that the 6800S averages up to 10% more performance than Nvidia’s best games like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Battlefield V, Back 4 blood, Borderland 3, and more.

AMD mentions that this was tested on a pre-production sample of the ROG Zephyrus G14 that was equipped with a Radeon RX 6800S – versus one Razer blade 14 which came with an Nvidia RTX 3080.

This is a gap in AMD’s product range and acts as the opposite pole to Nvidia’s Max-Q technology. And like Max-Q, these chips have energy efficiency optimizations and “new power-per-watt technologies”. AMD already had processors for these Ryzen HS series laptops, but GPUs are now available.

Availability of laptops

New laptops using AMD processors and graphics.

The success of AMD with its mobile graphics cards is limited. Laptops like the Dell G5 SE and the ROG Strix G15 AMD Advantage have shown incredible promise, especially given their prices. But the possibilities were extremely few and far between.

AMD says it will have over 20 new laptop designs in 2022 that will use both AMD Ryzen processors and AMD Radeon graphics. So far, only the Alienware m17 with up to an RX 6850M XT and the ROG Zephyrus G14 with the Ryzen 9 6900HS and the Radeon RX 6800S have been announced.

The AMD advantage

An AMD GPU and CPU that share gaming performance.

AMD has a number of intelligent technologies and frameworks that all AMD laptops benefit from. There is Smart Access Memory, yes, but the company is also announcing SmartShift Max, which uses these new components to dynamically switch the system between CPU and GPU.

Then there is SmartShift Eco, which is expected to be available later this year. According to AMD, SmartShift Eco should offer up to twice as long battery life when gaming with these latest components by seamlessly switching between discrete and integrated graphics.

Finally, there is Smart Access Graphics, which AMD says can perform 15% better on average by using the Radeon GPU directly rather than transferring control of the integrated graphics.

Many of these features are difficult to measure because there are no laptops with Radeon graphics without Ryzen processors.

Details, details, details

These GPUs are exciting entries in theory, but AMD was loose on the details. Not a word yet about arithmetic units, cache size or memory size. Most worryingly, AMD did not list specific frame rates in games.

We know that laptops with these new graphics cards are expected to be available from the first quarter of 2022.
