Apples new 24-inch iMac Not only is it notable for the addition of the new M1 chip, it is also the first Mac designed from the ground up for the M1. This is different from first wave of M1 Macswhich had the exact same designs as their previous Intel versions.

In my recent review of the M1 iMacI was honestly more excited about some of these new design and functional changes than about the different silicon inside. And since Apple tends to make its product lines look and feel harmonious, there’s a good chance these improvements will roll over to other Macs sooner rather than later.

New colors

It’s been a long time since Macs came in serious colors. Sure, you could get MacBooks in gray, silver, and some sort of muted gold, but let’s just say these were never vibrant, exciting hues. A page from the candy-colored CRT iMacs of the previous century, you can now get your iMac in seven colors, from deep purple to bright orange to plain old silver (please don’t get just plain silver). Apple hasn’t said these colors will apply to other products yet, but I’ll bet future MacBook Air buyers are already planning which color to get.

Power Brick with Ethernet

Outside of gaming machines, it is very rare these days to have an ethernet jack built into a laptop. But most desktops still have them, just not the new iMac. There it has been relocated to the Power Brick, which makes sense for something that you don’t have to plug in or unplug on a regular basis. Just make sure the iMac you are looking at has the ethernet jack – this is a $ 30 add-on feature to the most affordable model. I could also see this on MacBooks as a way to add an ethernet jack without the need for a USB-C dongle.

Current Macs with decent cameras (1080p resolution): the 27-inch Intel iMac and the 24-inch M1 iMac. Macs without decent cameras: everything else.

In a world full of zoom, having a good webcam is important, but that hardware spec has lagged behind on almost every laptop, including Windows and ChromeOS systems. How good is the iMac camera? I’ve lugged the 20-pound-27-inch model around my house many times just for use in meetings. Adding a 1080p camera to the MacBook range would fill one of the few flaws in this hardware.

Magnetic cable connection

The magnetic connection of the new iMac power cord seems to be such a complex feat of engineering that it’s hard to imagine that it was a one-off. Other sizes of iMac, and maybe even the Mac Mini or Mac Pro, could benefit from this. And there were rumors about them earlier this year Return of MagSafe connections for MacBooksThis could be a spiritual successor (although in the long run I still think a more universal USB-C power port on a laptop would be more useful).

You cannot combine accessories yet.

Personalized accessories

The new iMac offers a choice of three different keyboard designs – standard, with a Touch ID sensor and a number pad plus Touch ID – as well as the choice between a mouse and a standalone touchpad. Each of these devices are also available in all seven new iMac colors, though you can’t mix and match the colors just yet.

However, it is only a matter of time before these accessories are available a la carte and you can create a visual palette that combines, for example, a blue iMac, green keyboard, and orange touchpad (I don’t know, maybe they are). are your school colors or something). I’m confident these options will eventually become available to anyone with a Mac Mini, Mac Pro, or even a docked MacBook if they want to add a dash of personalization.
