    The long wait for an RS version of the Porsche Cayman is finally officially over. It’s been less than a month since the company released pictures of a disguised prototype GT4 RS being tested in the Alps, but now the finished car was revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show, and it’s a bummer.

    The earlier publication told us about the Nürburgring Nordschleife of the RS Lap time but was more cautious about the technical details. We knew the first RS Cayman would use a naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine, but now the company has confirmed that this will be the same 4.0-liter unit that is built into this one the 911 GT3. It’s the one that spins at 9000 rpm and has a peak power of 493 hp. The performance corresponds to an increase of 79 hp compared to the existing Cayman GT4 and 10 hp less than the engine in the GT3, a difference that Andreas Preuninger, head of the GT department, ascribes more to technology than to marketing: “The longer exhaust system means a loss due to dynamic pressure.”

    In contrast to the regular GT4, there will be no option for a manual transmission. Preuninger says there aren’t any available that can both work with the Cayman’s mid-engine and absorb its power and torque. The gear ratios of the standard seven-speed PDK dual clutch transmission have been shortened to improve acceleration. Porsche claims a time of 3.2 seconds from zero to 60 mph – half a second inside that for a regular GT4 equipped with PDK – and a top speed of 196 mph, which is achieved in seventh gear. (The GT4’s max speed of 187 mph comes in sixth.)

    We can safely assume that it will sound really epic when extended, thanks to the bespoke exhaust system, but also to the high air intakes behind the doors that have been carefully tuned for induction noise. “The first cars we built were actually too loud. We wanted a high-quality sound,” says Preuninger, promising that it should be “the most intense sound ever in a GT car”.

    The other side of the power-to-weight ratio has also been sharpened with conscientious savings in mass. The fenders are made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and contain cooling channels similar to those of the previous generation 991 911 GT3 RS and GT2 RS. With the optional Weissach package, the front hood, the exterior mirror caps, the upper and lower side air inlets and the rear wing element are also made of carbon. Porsche claims a U.S. curb weight of 3,227 pounds, 49 pounds less than a PDK equipped GT4.

    Chassis changes include a 1.2-inch reduction in ride height, ball joint suspensions, revised spring and stabilizer rates, and new Bilstein dampers, as well as 20-inch forged aluminum wheels with motorsport-style central locking. Cast iron brake discs will come as standard, with Porsche’s PCCB carbon ceramic discs as an upgrade option.

    Other aerodynamic changes include the suspended rear wing, an adjustable front diffuser and a new front spoiler with “flow around” blades. The hood also contains NACA ducts, while the vents on the fenders help reduce air pressure in the wheelhouses. Overall, the RS makes up to 25 percent more downforce than the regular GT4, with Preuninger saying that equates to about 220 pounds at 120 mph.

    Now that Porsche has almost certainly created the ultimate combustion-powered Cayman (since the next generation of the sports car will be all-electric), it’s predictable that Porsche will be dying for it. The GT4 RS will cost $ 141,700 with the first cars reaching US buyers in the summer of 2022. RS models, the biggest problem for potential buyers could be finding a dealer willing to get their money on one take of the highly competitive build slots.
